Just for the record

Totally agree with last poster Venice is a must visit place and totally disagree with OP - I have found Italian drivers to be pretty good although their overtaking technique seems rather relaxed.
I didn't drive in Rome but crossing roads was OK as the drivers gave way when they needed to unlike many UK cities.
I hate the Italian road signs which always utterly baffle me but I found the drivers to be quite tolerant of an idiot on their roads. I'd say based on my experiences on the whole UK driving is faster and poorer.

In the week and a bit i've been here i've only seen 4 cars without at least one bit of body damage
On the subject of crossing the road any sign of being english ie waiting for a gap in traffic equalls not crossing the road! :D

Well that certainly wasn't my experience. Anyway don't they have a different attitude to parking in Italy and elseweher, the odd nudge to move an awkward car is regarded as fair game!
Now I think of it outside Rome most of the newer cars were pristine.
Regarding crossing the road - quite, you step out and keep going. When in Rome ...
It's a good game once you realise they won't actually run you down

I only know 2 things about driving in Italy
Rule 1, always join the shortest queue, no matter which way it's going
Rule 2, what's behind me doesn't matter.
