we had some spare 31 kumho new style mt's that we offered him and he almost went for it . . . at least his dad has got a v8 rangie classic

My understanding of them though it may be wrong is that they are a valve the releases excessive manifold pressure generated by the turbo so that if you take your foot off the gas the valve "dumps" the pressure out of the system thus saving you blowing chunks out of the engine due to too much turbo boost.

Hence most noticable on sporty motors as they easy off after some hard acceleration "Vrrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmm........Ptsssssstttsttstt"

Simplified, when you lift off the pressure slows the turbo.  When you put your foot back down it has to speed up again - ie turbo lag.  A dump valve releases the pressure so that the turbo keeps spinning fast, decreasing lag.  More for higher-revving petrol engines usually, but a few people have foitted them to diesels.  don't know how much you gain though
