Vehicle & Technical > Series Land Rovers
I Finally have bought a Series 2 Land Rover !
TBM:
If you want an off road monster, then that engine will be the first thing to go!
carbore:
Me too, series 3 2 1/4 petrol

Im going to put drop sides on it as we have a small holding and want it for "gofa" jobs. Also will be green laned an trailed (My freelanders too new).
Tax exempted and peanuts to insure so wont cost much to have around, but......
1 or 2 out riggers need work
water pump minor leak
The swivels
Gearbox whine in all but 4th (apparently this suggests layshaft bearing, but im hoping its just in need of oil!!! tomorrows job)
Footwells and Door posts need repair (but I always wanted to learn to weld)
Electrics need de-bodging
Not enough seats holding the gaffer tape together.
I got the LRO land rover series 3 restoration book, its good because its easier to read than a manual but you learn what too look out for, then go and read the manual (and I wish id bought the popper workshop one before I spent £18 on a not so good Haynes on)
ENJOY YOUR NEW PROJECT!
Lucy1978:
the layshaft bearings are dead easy to replace, so if oil doesn't work don't be afraid to whip the box out and open it up.
Brian the Sn@il:
Im in two minds at what to do with it though
I collect it tommorrow morning so will know how bad it is then but
A) Restore it back to original and sell it
B) Make it into a Company Off road Monster ( its a commercial vehicle )
Brian the Sn@il:
--- Quote from: "Spyderman" ---
--- Quote from: "Brian the Sn@il" ---series 3 is good, its 1978, it says its a 2.289 cc does that make it a diesel ?
--- End quote ---
It's a series III and it's a Diesel.
2 1/4 Petrol & Diesel share the same engine block.
--- End quote ---
how do you know its a diesel ?
