Yet another government knee jerk reaction to things......

Ban hand guns, gun crime increases by over 300%

Ban greenlaning, perfectly law abiding people end up breaking the law, and it doesn't stop the idiots that go off the tracks anyway!!

Ban knives, knive attacks increase by X%

Ban fox hunting, people still go out anyway!!! but are operating illegally!!

And what ever happened to our government making the laws for our country?? more and more come over from Brussells from people that aren't even voted in!!! at least (In Theory) we can get rid of our idiots when they P us off!! we can't seem to get rid of europe!!

Er, but how much would gun crime have increased if they HADN'T banned guns?  I'm not really seeing how handguns being legal is in any way going to be a good thing.

Obviously we couldn't predict, but that wasn't my point............

The governments attitude is to ban something, then they think it won't happen any more!

But it is only really the law abiding people that gave up their guns, people like a mate of mine that hunts! He can still have his rifles etc, but not a hand gun that was used for final dispatch as required, he was also in the local gun club and they used to compete with other clubs using hand guns, they obviously can't anymore.  I know that there were SOME handed in during the amnesty, but proportionally it was a tiny amount.

The scrotes on the other hand held onto their weapons, and use them to scare the life out of the general public and take what they want!! Thats not right in my book.............. However.................

Allowing "anyone" to have a gun is in my mind not good, I don't like the American attitude of a gun here, and another there in case the burgler gets to the 1st one, and I do think the American police can be a bit slap happy with their guns, having said that......If I was a cop with a gun and was facing a crack head with a gun then I think I know what I'd do!!!

I think LSP is spot on, I don't think the majority of police would want handguns, and that is good in my book, its the gung ho ones that WANT the weapons that should NOT have them, give them to the ones with a sense of the damage they can do!!

Billy Connolly once said "The desire to be a politician should forbid you from EVER becoming one" I think that applies to any position of power, and giving some of the police that I know a weapon like that would be a big mistake.

I just think that the government attitude of making things illegal is pathetic, and only serves to criminalise the general public and allows the scrotes to get on with what they want as the police have no power against them anymore due to "Human rights" et al. The police WANT to do the job, its what they signed up for, but progressively all their powers have been taken away from them.

(OK Rant over)

In Switzerland it is compulsory for all males to do a form of National Service.
During this National Service they give you an automatic rifle and semi-automatic pistol
When you finish you get to keep one or both weapons; this is compulsory for all men between 20 and 42.
This gives Switzerland the highest %age per capita of (legal) gun ownership in the world.  Admittedly, there are restrictions on ammunition but this only applies to military issued bullets (in a country where shooting is a bigger national pastime than it is in America purchase of ammunition is not a problem)
Switzerland have had a well armed militia for a few hundred years - why do you think Hitler never invaded!

Question:

Which country has the lowest rate of gun crime in Europe?

Most murders in this country are committed using kitchen knives. I don't see a ban being imposed.
The handgun ban was just another knee jerk reaction, a bit like the Dangerous Dogs Act. That really stamped out that danger didn't it?
I mean, I come across Japanese Toza fighting dogs every day of my life!
If people want to get guns they will get them, regardless of the law or not. I dealt with a guy who called his guns 'babies'. He also had pictures of Hitler, Himmler and Goebbels on his wall. He was a holocaust denier, but I still couldn't have the guns off him because I was not qualified to say he was menty
So sorry Therm, in relation to your argument, the answer could be ban anything that might be dangerous or cause harm. Guns, dogs, knives, beer, fags, cars, electricity, nuts, ice cream, sun light, where do you stop?

I bet it would have very little effect.  The legal gun users are a major minority when it comes to commiting gun crimes.  The crimes, murders etc are commited by users who buy guns on the black market.  Banning hand guns was a knee jerk reaction to the dunblane masacre and has (in my opinion of course) had little if no effect on crime statistics.

Likewise, as one who had inside experience of the planning section of the Home Office I've met put it "the plans were in place before Dunblane, all they wanted was the trigger event, neither civil nor servant they are more interested in protecting themselves against any risk of rightous uprising, disarming the law abiding at every opertunity".

No surprise really, considering what happened in 1919.

Didnt the cretin at Dunblane have a legally held pistol .He was a nutter and I think his local force had recommended he have his license revoked. The first time my local firearms person came to my house .They are civilian is my area.He said we have been in touch with your doctor and in 1993 you were suffering from mild depression .Can you tell me why? Yes I replied my wife had just died and I wasnt on top of my game for a few weeks.Didnt like the tablets so never took them.I sorted myself out.He decided I was ok to be trusted.I must still be ok they have given me an open license. The last time she came round she asked my 14 year old daughter wasnt it time she had her own license.

Not quite, he was 'known' and the local firearms enquiry officer and other local police officers wanted his FAC revoked (similar to Ryan in Hungerford) a senior officer over-ruled them citing Hamiltons propensity for legal action. There was a line of thought from local information, surpressed at the enquiry, that he was an informant.

Having had an issue with an informant in illegal possesion of a firearm, and the local police treating him as gold plated, I ended up using CrimeStoppers (Uncle Mick was fronting them at the time, so I went via the MET) to kick start the process, he was found to be in possession of several other illegal weapons and lost his FAC & SGC in court. The last I heard he had reapplied for them, even though part of the tariff upon conviction is a lifetime ban...        It wouldn't surprise me at all if that wasn't the case in Dunblane.

What ban on hunting foxs are you on about, there is no outright ban on hunting foxs in this country. There is a ban on hunting with hounds, which technically makes it illegal if when walking you dog it catches and kills a rabbits etc.
Due to the nature of the supposed ban on 'fox hunting' it is perfectly legal to chase a fox with hounds as log as the hounds do no catch the fox. This means you can flush out a fox with hounds as log as it is killed by something else, for instance it is then shot or caught and kill by another animal like a bird of pray.

A perfect case of wasting MP time combined with dubious reporting and evan more dubious legal wording purely for votes, animal cruelty you must be joking.

Of course, you are right, thats what I meant, as you say, you can still use the hounds but then shoot the fox or something like that, Bit like having a dog and barking youself

But there are plenty hunts going on that the hounds still get the fox, its what they were bred for, how do you stop it? the only way is to cull the hounds which of course are not vermin to a farmer, nor do they kill the chickens or endanger the livestock young!! Whereas the fox does and is and also helps spread disease like mange!

Most farmers I know keep the fox population down with the rifle, so what the hunts used to get was a very small proportion. useless government legislation!!
