gaerbox Ulitimate faff challenge.

Chris Putt:
Got me new box from ashcrofts a couple of weeks ago and Im in the process of putting the whole lot back in the vehicle now the various bits have been reassembled. Anyone got any sharp ideas on how to get the bell housing to mate back up to the engine again?

Seems to be a massive faff with three trolley jacks, vehicle on the floor and three people pushing/pulling/wobbling in order to try and get it in?!

Is there an easier way (bearing in mind I dont ave an engine crane?!) or any tips for getting it all lined up?

What you'll have found is that once the gear/trans boxes have been removed that the engine sits rear downwards and your trying to get the bell up straight......, you need to have the gear box at an angle to get them home.......

Its just a question of shoving it harder, said the Bishop to the actress  , it will slip in.......

If required, I can send over the "shoving team"

Changed the clutch on mine last week, we found that the engine sat level with the box removed and used a jack to lift the front of the engine therefore pushing the back down, gearbox slides straight on bang in a few nuts and bolts, release the jack and put the cross member back in. Must admit we did have the advantage of a four post ramp.

Good luck

Good point with the clutch, if you  have a new one, check alignment, and perhaps a bit of lubrication on the spline shaft and centre hole on the clutch may ease things

Need to raise the front of the engine first. A piece of 3x2 between the front of the block and the floor then add chocks until you get a good tilt on it. This helps the box go on at the back.

Instead of an engine crane I used a very large ratchet strap around the box, up thru the trans hole in the floor and around another piece of braced 3x2. When you lift or jack the box, tighten the strap and the box dosent fall on you - which is nice...

I've also heard of guys using longer pieces of screwed rod to draw the box into position. Remove bottom studs (2), fit 8 inches of rod thru hole, nut and washer on back to stop it coming thru. Then align box with rods, push a bit, get 2 more nuts on and let the ratchet do the rest.

Good luck!

Stu.
