winch bumper
anaxemurderer:
Looking to either buy or make a winch bumper for my classic. Would be to fit low line style electric winch (old x9 for the moment but new one when i can afford)
Anybody got a suggestion, who to buy from, pics/drawings of homemade ones.
Has to be a tight fitting as humanly possible. I very keen to preserve my approach angle.

Perhaps like me you need a removable one?
clbarclay:
Most cheap comercial RRC/disco bumpers I've seen will ruin approach angle nicely. There is room on a RRC without aircon to hide a typical low line winch so that only the fairlead protrudes beyond the grill any significant distance.
I was planning to make my own bumper but financial situation prevented me from getting an electric winch, plus manual winches are more versetile. My plan for a winch bumpre was to start with a comercial winch plate like one of these
Then either welding or fitting side plates and bolting to chassis as far back as possible, then adjusting the standard bumper to fit over the top.
I've seen people adapt defender winch bumpers and they don't look too bad, though not the neatest solution.

RRB thought about a removable one but decided it was too much hassle. Far to lazy to lump around a winch! Also thought about centre mounted one but thats alot of work. So that project is on hold for time being.
clbarclay, that was my thinking for making one, there is loads of space available. Like you say the comercial ones are rubbish. There ae some quite nice disco bumpers around now. But although the mounts should be the same you can never be sure how it will turn out.
I'd want to do it cheap, as i'm just about to start a msc so shouldn't be spending money!

£50 buys the Hi-Lift winching kit, plus you need some chain.
For the 1 time I've used my electreic wing off-road it's not worth it, though I've used the Hi-Lift as a winch a couple of times. Mostly the electric has been hauling cars around and on/off trailers.
