Not wanting to start a row here :D  but why would a receiving antenna need power ~ no matter where it's mounted?

Most window mounted aerials are very directional, to compensate they have power amplifiers built in to artificially boost the aerials gain.

Audi 100 I had had the amp buried in the rear pillar and the aerial was actually the demister. Senator had one in the dash attached to a tiny 'bee-sting' aerial. I'm sure I've heard of similar used in LR cars.

Ok, we're talking a difference in terminology here then. When you said "power" I thought you meant volts and amps but really you were referring to an amplifier. S'okay  :D
