i get asked about the snorkel, why do you have the exhaust that high, and a little lad said to his dad why has it got a chimney.

It surprised me how often I get asked that with the Dakar...

I heard somewhere...or read somewhere... that wires were only legal if factory fitted... ie, to early camels ? Does that sound right ?... legislation being what it is they are all probobly illegal now... even on green lanes, which, of course, are mostly liable to the same laws as any road...

Shame I can't justify having them on mine as they do look good....

Legal or no, I pity the poor pedestrian who steps out in front of you and loses a limb to them.  Aren't you tempted to take them off when not off-roading, for safety's sake?  Also you may find you're invalidating your insurance.

The whole "pedestrian friendly" thing leaves me completely confused.  Surely the safest things is for the stupid lemmings to look before stepping out in front of 2 tonnes of Land Rover bearing down on them?

Well, yes, but the front of a Land Rover hitting you at 20mph is big and blunt, whereas a piece of steel wire isn't.  I know which I'd rather walk out in front of.

Had a guy ask what the chimney was for , told hid so i could go in deep water he said how deep , i replied as long as that the top is out of the water were ok , he just looked dome not sure whether to beleave me or not .

As for the roof wires i have started to use the thin ratchet straps about an inch wide and come in all colours  they seam to work as well as the wire ones and easier to take on and off

i've noticed loads of people referring to the high exhausts (snorkels)...they seem to fail to notice the standard metal pipe out the back where it normally is...

i got asked if i take my rangie double cab offroad...i would have thought the coating of mud and panel damage gave the answer away (stupid rockery garden thingies in tesco car park   )

and i always remember the first time i took my first rangie offroad and got it plastered in mud / clay...i turned up at school and someone came in and asked me did i know what had happened to my car

I will tell you a good one.

I parked on double yellows the other day just to drop off a part at a shop.

The traffic warden came down the street in a fast walk to slap a ticket on it as they do...

by the time he got to my motor i was out of the shop and just getting back in the disco...

He tapped on the window and said as i cringed...

I should give you a ticket but because your truck looks so good you are free to go.

nice that...... plus he jokingly said "i can't reach the winscreen to slap a ticket on anyway!"
Now defendered up!
