Gearboxes

Ola,
I have in the shed 2 gearboxes which came with the landrover however i have no idea if they are series1,2 or 3.I have taken the only numbers i can see from them but is there anyother way to tell what they are from.

Right strictly speaking the gearboxes are not exactly linked to the year that the land rovers are made or the models but the numbers can give us a rough idea as to what landies they went in.

So the

1510 is out of a Petrol 109 early series 2, something around 1960

next is the 254*****E

The 254 tells us that it is for the a series 2 export LHD petrol 109 basic. Anything from the years 1961 to 1972

Now the E denotes like the chassis number about certain modifications that the box had. And from memory on post D suffix boxes the Layshaft front bearing is bigger and so the clutch release mechanism unit has a different casting mouding to the earlier boxes to allow for this.

Also I'm fairly sure that from suffix B onwards the gearing ratio's were slightly revised and were a little higher than the earlier one's

So basically they are both 109 boxes,In terms of build quality are they stronger than the swb boxes?

now i just need to work out what to do with them.

The boxes you have are stronger than the later all-syncro Series 3 boxes. As for what to do with them, keep them for spares?
