Fairly daft oil question

Not sure where you heard that. GL5 is for Hypoid type gears, where extra "sliding" pressure is exerted on the oil, so for diffs use GL5 for Gearboxes and transferes use a GL4

Which would be fair enough, as the diffs don't contain any brass or bronze parts, but then I don't think Rover diffs are hypoid either, the pinion is on the same level as the crownwheel.
