The other day my charge light started to work backwards. (light was on after the ignition was turned off but off when ignition was on)

Then it started working ok but now the charge light is on when driving and getting brighter up to about 2K then starts flashinbg while getting brighter......

Presume its a knackered alternator?

Also my Rev counter now has a mind of its own working when it wants to and doing what it feels like.

I have a 200 TDi disco

Been through any water lately :?:  :?:

Sounds like an iffy connection.....

simon15:
always going in and out of water :)

But there is a small black wire hanging around behind the alternator, it bridges the 2 black boxes but has always been like it since i have had it.

dodgy earths/or as before, moist electrics!

rev counter runs off the alternator output, so thats definatley sus, although could be a duff battery too, see if you can borrow a good battery.

doris:
This usually signifies a popped rectifier in the alternator.  This allows battery voltage to trickle away through the charge light.  If you leave it for a few days it will completely discharge your battery in this way.

I have always swapped the alternator when this has happened, but I believe it is possible to change the rectifier pack within it.
