Oil for gearbox and transfer box etc
« on: August 02, 2007, 12:25:10 »
My mate has a series 2 and needs to know what kind of oil to put in the diffs and the gearbox and transfer box. I thought it was EP90 in diffs and transfer box then ATF in the gearbox?

EP90 in axles all gearboxes swivel joints stearing relay and box.

EP80 or 80W90 is not suitable and shouldn't be used

80W90 is fine in a series 'box, slightly nicer when the box is cold, acts just like EP90 when warm.  The thing to watch for is GL4 spec, you need it for the main box.  Alot of modern oils are GL5 but thats not good for yellow metals - I think its only the main box that contains them.  Transferbox and axles aren't fussy.  Anythings much better than nothing so regular level checks are the most important thing.

Whatever you do.
Don't put ATF in a series box, it will kill it.

Didn't know that, can you elaborate?

I did notice that Halfrauds went back to GL4 recently.
