Thinking of another V8 RRC...

Well my disco is going soon as it need rather a lot of welding for what i want to use it for.

So im now thinking of getting another V8 :)

I loved my old one but this time i want a LPG converted one.



Just one main question is the fuel consumption the same when running on gas?

Aslo how do you go about waterproofing the elecs etc?


I want to turn it into a monster maybe even bobtail or pickup...

When mine was running right it would do around 14-16 mpg on petrol and around 12-14 on gas @37.9p/litre

Mine is a cheaper drawthrough system so looses a bit of power but I can flick a switch and have full power on petrol instantly  :twisted:

Once it is up to cruising speed, or around town you dont notice it

If your old one is available why not convert it? Its not a hard job

i sold the old one months ago.

i have heard mixed stories about lpg. some doing 15 mpg like yours and others doing around 25 mpg ??

I think the 25mpg is like the equivalent when using cheaper fuel so it does half the mpg at half the price of the fuel so overall it works out at 30mpg! its hard to explain!

im in the same boat , got me a 110 v8, she runs a treat on petrol and is doing 11 / 12 to the gallon, she is supposed to be going back in in a week or 2 for a conversion, just wondering if im doing the right thing!
of the people i know its about 50/50, swear by it/swear at it.
plus my mate has a constant stream of gas vehicle in for repair, or they dont run right etc.
my only personal experiance with gas was a brand new nissan fork truck we had a few years ago, and i think we could use it about 2 days a week, it was the biggest 5 tonn of crap i had ever bought, they were consantly out to it to get it running again, and again.

My disco has been on lpg ever since i got it and not had any problems with the lpg side of it. just make sure its set up ok and it should be ok.

It depends on the system, most cheap systems are only single point injection which is not as good for a number of reasons as more expensive multipoint systems. It depends how many miles you do as to whether its worth spending the extra or not.

i,m in the middle of converting mine as for the waterproofing i have moved my coil inside the car and i,m in the middle of making a alumium plate in front of the dizzy so it will then be good in water

mine runs like clockwork on gas and petrol.
im popping on the webber carb ive got for it with the sprintgas mixer then quick resray then it getting sold due to having 3 4x4's and cant really afford them all so im going down to my grand cherry for everything.

My v8 disco runs on gas better than on petrol, mainly due to some sort of sensor fault. The reason it runs better on gas is the conversion is of the mixer type.

If it was running the injection system it would try to follow what the cars ecu is doing thus any running problems on petrol would be duplicated on gas, if not exagerated. So in my opinion you are better off with the mixer type system.

1 it's much simpler

2 you can start on gas (also possible with injection but not ideal)

3 you can tune it yourself with the aid of a laptop or gas analyser. (on my previous car the lambda control system came with a handheld unit for set up so no computers or trips to the garage)

4 the loss in MPG compared to  the injection system is far outweighed by the cost of the injection sytem, typically 1-2 mpg.


I'm currently in the process of installing an injection system on my wifes renault megane. The reason is that it is better suited to that application as risk of backfire almost nil, however a properly setup mixer type should not backfire.

Any vehicle after 98 will have to have an injection system due to emmisions regs. pre 98 is a choice, Anything with a plastic inlet manifold is best with injection. other than that save your money and have a mixer system. if your buying a S/H range rover and find one with injection it's all good.

I get 12.5mpg and 14 on a run, I did enquire on the LPG forum and the gereral concensus is that these figures are about right for a gas converted landy.

Having had all 3, draw through, single point and multipoint I'd go multi every time.

It's by far the easiest to set up, once it's installed plug in the laptop and run "autocallibration" job done.

If it's not running right on petrol, don't ignore the problem, fix it.

Blue is currently still on draw through, it runs lean at high throttle so looses power but does save a bit of fuel.  When it backfires it's usually burning out a valve.

The LSE and RRR are both on multipoint for towing.  the system in RRR will probably end up in Blue now and the LSE just went to Whitby and back with 1,900kg of Elddis on the back, gas all the way :D Someone say you get more power flicking back onto petrol? not with multipoint :wink:

One final thought, a multipoint system will run fine with a snorkel.

If your getting problems with leaning off at wide throttle openings I would suggest that you either have a tune issue or the vaporiser simply isn't up to the job and that would be the cause of the valves burning. I've always run an omvl r90e vap, good for 300bhp.

The system on my current disco has been on there for 60k with no burnt valves etc.

My disco is now up for sale so hopefully have a V8 soon ish...

Hopefully already have a LPG conversion and the plan is to bobtail it anf fit at least 33" muds :)

No it's just one of the problems with draw through, unlike single point which has Lamda feedback a multipoint can not be tuned to match all load conditions, it's why people like Chris Perfect sell economisers for such systems but I'm not throwing any more money at this system now.
