Charge light on

(1/2) > >>

graham2306:
Was on the M40 monday morning heading for Northumberland and the battery charge light started to flash.  Pulled over and had a look and everything seemed connected, carried on driving on the basis that if it wasn't charging the wipers would slow down but the deisel would keep going until I got somewhere safe.

Stopped off at a freinds in Cheshire and we put a meter and an alternator tester across the battery, both said no problem, battery had 13v and when the alternator kicked in showed 14.2v.  So we went to Northumberland as planned, after all I have got one of those yellow card tool kit/spares packages in my wallet and they know a man who can.

Whe nothing electrical is on the charge light flashes, when you put a load on, the heater fan or headlights it come on and stays on.  It has been suggested that it is a bad eart somewhere, anyone got any ideas how to find it or what else it might be?

Cheers

Graham

I had similar after a trip to Langdale quest. It was very wet and we had been in lots of muddy water. Solved it by tightening up the fan belt.
Then on another trip to Langdale same happened but tightening the belt didn't work this time. It turned out to be the brushes on the alternator were stuck and not making contact with the comutator, therefore light was on.
Hope that is of some help.

does sound like a loose belt to me

graham2306:
Surely if it's a loose belt it wouldn't be consistently putting full charge out across the battery.  We did tighten the belt and it made no difference light still comes on.

Cheers anyway guys.

tonycougar:
Have you checked the brushes?
