Does the radiator play any part in oil/gearbox cooling?
(1/1)

This is a really daft question about oil coolers and radiators.........
The gearbox is cooled by circulating oil through the oil cooler.
The engine is cooled by circulating water through the radiator.
Does the rad play any part in oil/gearbox cooling?
I am sure I know the answer. It's just that somebody asked me a question about a rad I'm selling and suddenly I'm doubting myself!!

Oil cooling - only in as much as keeping the general engine temp down - more a knock on effect than a primary function :)
Gearbox - nowt.

Fantastic. I knew I wasn't going mad.

Err, well.
On the LT77 there is a hairy sausage type oil cooler for the gearbox ahead of the rad
On the Auto box the LH end (hoty end) of the water rad is ALSO an oil cooler.
On the 3.9 the RH end of the rad is an engine oil cooler.
So it depends on which car.
Disco_Stu:
Well I didn't know that. Cheers RRB, you learn something on this forum everyday!
