7's and 8's

Hi All

rim sizes  :?

I've read alot about tyres but don't know a lot about rims.

I am hoping to fit new tyres to the disco and am thinking of 265's would these go on standard  7" rims or would they be better on 8's and do 8's have a better offset stopping them hitting the arms like the 235's do now...

I have 285's on 7's, they're a bit wide really, but i suspect that 265's would be ideal on 7's.....

Offset can varry a lot, its not necciserilly proportional to rim width.

265 wide tyres fit quite happily on a 7 inch rim, but it is the minimum, any narrower and problems will arise.

Most aftermarket steel rims (modulars and 8 spokes) tend to have less off set (measured from center of rim to hub surface) or evan negative offset compared to land rover rims, which makes them stick out further and helps clearence on radius arms if using larger tyres. alternatively reduced off set wheels are used by trialers with standard size tyres to make the turn tighter.

There are 2 set screws (bolts with thread along the whole length), one on each side on the hub next to the chrome swival. By slakening of the locking nut these can be wound out to reduce the steering lock and prevent tyres from catching.

All the manufactures figures I've seen for 285 tyres recomend a minimum of 7.5" wide rim.

That doesn't mean they woun't fit on a 7" rim but...

Yeh i know, i was after eights. but i just couldn't get them, as it is, they are slightly over tyred... but they'll be ok til i wear them out, then i'll get 265's.....
