Heres one for you

We were out in my mates classic last night . We had to give it a bump start to get it going as the battery was pretty flat altough was turning over very slowly  and the starter motor is playing up . Anyway she bump started fine and we took her for a 20 mile spin . Got home turned her off . Then went to try and start her again straight away as we decided to park somewhere else  and she was dead ...i mean nothing no interior lights no ignition lights the clock wasn;t even working . Popped the bonnet to check the battery connections .
Then we noticed the interior lights had come back on so put the key in turned it again nothing and all the lights went out again. Then after about 5 mins the lights came back on, so this time tried turning the head lights on .As soon as pressed the switch all the interior lights went out again and there was nothing

Any ideas what the problem may be? I think its shorting out somewhere, there did seem to be a click from where the relays are  then nothing

Anyone come across this before ...its a 1990 classic with the VM diesel in it

Sounds like your battery is shot.  :?
Try charging the battery properly & also test the alternator output when the vehicle is running.   Places like ATS will be able to test your batteries condition.
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

Mostl likely a poor connection in the battery circuit. Battery posts - remove clean retighten. Then try the bolted connections at the other end of those cables. Nothing obvious found, move on the engine to chassis earth strap, which can be hard to find. Take care with spanners etc used on live cables!!!

Your Alternator doesn't charge the battery.
The battery seems fine as it regenerates itself a little bit.
Charge it with a battery charger, bump start the car again hold a multimeter to the battery
You should read something between 13.4 and 14.4V DC while engine running.
If not = Alternator or charging circuit

loose connection on the starter motor. Tightened it up turned the key..hey presto she fired up straight away
