cablemodem/wifi router help needed
strapping young lad:
a colleague in work has virginmedia cablemodem, which has ethernet and usb at the back
the surfboard 4200
and has been given a linksys wrk54g ethernet wireless router so she can have wifi in the house.
anyway..
she was given instructions basically saying hook up the ethernet port of the modem to the ethernet port of the router and "theoretically" thats all she needs to do
however its not playing ball, no net access but she can see the router and it seems the router does pick up an ip address from the modem but is not given a default gateway nor dns. just an ip.
im stuck, cos i dont deal with cablemodems and havent done so in 5 years so ive forgotten a lot (i used to support them!)
so can anyone assist?
i did tell her to get an access point instead but she was given this for owt.
anyway as an addage, i plugged in her work laptop via the ethernet cable directly to the cablemodem and still no browsing!
im lost!
does the modem need config changes or do i need to do something else to get this thing to work?
any help would be appreciated
cheers

Evilgoat:
The cable modem is normally locked to the ethernet (mac) address of the computer it was setup on/ If you can find this out then the Belkin SHOULD be able to pretend to be that address and all will be well. Otherwise get it all setup right and run the software, this will register the Router.
Make sure you are plugging the cable modem into the router's WAN port and check to see if you need a crossover cable or not (You shouldnt do).
DONT call NTL/Virgin, you'll get no-where fast. Powercycling the modem for 10 mins may help too.
strapping young lad:
the cablemodem was originally hooked up to the house pc via USB not ethernet, would this make a difference?
i did think i had cloned the mac of the ethernet port of the original PC as the linksys router enables you to do this.
Evilgoat:
ahh
The USB interface will have a mac too, you might need to reconnect it to get this.
wire it all up as was and get connected.
go to start -=> run and type cmd and press enter
type ipconfig /all
you should see all the network connections and assiciated MACs
strapping young lad:
so you reckon if i clone the USB MAC address onto the router i should be fine?
when i used to work for blueyonder we were able to have more than one mac address matched up to the modem, maybe ill ask one of my ex-colleagues if they can help an old friend out! :)
in the interim though ill ask me mate to do this and see what happens
