Offside Wheel Wobble

had the discovery jacked up last night (replacing a brake stone guard) and noticed a fair amount of wobble in the front offside wheel. There appears to be none in the vertical direction but a few mm in the horizontal direction when wobbled. Am i right in assuming that as there is no play vertically the wheel bearings are ok?

The next question is obviously what causes the horizontal play - slack in the steering drag link joints?

Try again and have a closer look. If it's play in the steering components the wheel will not be moving in relation to the hub.

If it's bearings (wheel or swivel) you'll notice the wheel move but the hub and steering components stay still (or move differently).

cheers for that skibum - from memory the wheel and hub movced together and there seemed to be movement in the track rod arm as well (not the drag arm as i put, got confused) Might be the track rod end joints gone?

get a buddy to hold the brake on, this isolates the wheel bearing. If theres still play then its in the swivel brgs/bushings, if its gone its prob in the wheel brg.
As has been mentioned, also check for play in the track rod end

Sounds like the drop-arm ball joint.

But thats only cos' I just replaced one! So don't take my word!
