Sill Replacement

Obviously i have seen the pictures in RRB's gallerys, but there is no way in hell i can weld it myself (have some welding experience but never done a car).

So is there anyone here who could do it inexpensively? lol, i have a mig welder and i will have the replacement sills, just not the knowledge to do the rest of it.

If you can weld properly then its doesn't really matter if its on a car or not, though welding on a car invariably involves vertical welding. If not then practice makes purfect so make sure you have lots of scrap to practice on. The most important part with welding is the preperation, make sure your welding to clean thick steel not the remains of a rusty sill.


Do you have the enthusiasm? I don't mean to be dishartening, but its not a quick job, particarly if like me you use an air chisel and find half the drivers foot well that perviously aperaed solid just fall out with the vibrations. It didn't help though that I was cutting out all of the sill to replace it with 100*50 box section, rather than just use a repair section.

One tip is take lots of measurements of relative positions of the sills and the B pillar to make sure they are in the right position afterwards. Also only do one sill at a time for obvious strength reasons, acts as a suitable place to measure ho far out the sill is on the other side as you position it and finaly gives you the option of repairing one side and then drive the car about afterwards rather than having to wait for both sides to be finished.

It is nice once you've got a shinny new sill and solid footwell in place :D

Spent ages with Red and still had to adjust the door shuts.

I can give you a step by step sometime, I managed to organise mine so that I did no welding from underneath at all if I could help it, mostly it was downhand horizontal or vertical.

Still took 2 months of evening and weekends as time permitted.

Always a trade off thoughm no-one will ever make as good a job as doing it yourself but you have to pay for the privalige.

It's ok when you can say to yourself that it's cost effective to stay at work and pay someone else but when you are time-rich and cash poor it's a different story.
