« on: May 24, 2007, 15:58:23 »
Could some one please tell me the benefits of double cardon props over wide angle yoke props?? need longer props as just lifted my 90 3"s and wondering if the price of double cardons is worth it??

Thanx

Lifting the car increases the angles that the propshaft ujs work at in the usual operating condition (driving along the road), this greatly increases the loading on the joints, and consequently reduces their life quite dramatically.

A wide angle propshaft will do noting to cure this effect, though it will prevent the joint binding on full articulation (and the likely catastrophic failure)

A DC propshaft, by virtue of the twin UJs, reduces the angle that the UJs are working at and therefore prolongs their life.

There are a load of threads on this subject that go into more detail, do a search on "double cardon" (set to all terms) if you want more details.

Oh yes, shop around propshaft manufacturers as you'll be able to get one for a lot less than the off the shelf price.

Wolfie

Also try correct spelling of Cardan, and probably worth trying Carden as you see this used quite a lot too.

As Wolfie says, don't go by price of the likes Scorpion Racing etc, speak to
 either..

A wide angle will be cheaper than a DC jobby, mainly cos the parts are cheaper.

Some Landys were fitted with wide yolks as standard, too.

I'd also give Dave Mac Propshafts in Cov a call. When I went DC on mine he was pretty competitive on price, and darned convienient for me!

As Wolfie says, a wide yolk does a different job from a DC and it's not just about vibration. Add 5-10deg of working angle to a prop and the wear rate increases exponentially. DC unit halve the working angle on the joints.

Inteterstingly, a standard UJ (as in 2 yolks and a cruciform) is a 'cardan' joint. Basically, most props technically feature two Cardan joints (one at each end) but this doesn't make them 'double cardan' in the sense we're talking about. 'Double Cardan' here refers to the use of two close-coupled Cardan units in a single coupling, and this will usually be at one end of the shaft. The other shaft end will feature the normal single cardan coupling. Clear as mud, eh?

If you do go for one, don't opt for the LR Discovery II DC one. They have no grease nipples and as such don't last.

Someone like propshaft clinic will do a fully geasable one with larger and wider Nissan UJ's for about 280 pounds and it is worth the extra.

The larger DC units are manufactured by Saginaw and were/are fitted to RBs, Nissans, Toyotas and a number of other vehicles. IIRC, they were also on a limited number of v8 90s.

A unit as described above may well be available for less money than stated if you shop around.
