Wipers advice please.
« on: May 12, 2007, 09:28:32 »
1996 300Tdi Defender. When operating the wipers i get a continuous 'Clack' on the downward sweep as the wiper arm hits the washer nozzle. Thought about simply removing the arm and turning it a couple of splines the other way but the arm then 'Clacks' on the snorkel

Is this likely to be a worn wheelbox?

Just need confirmation before i go stripping the dash out leaving me without the car.

Thanks
Graeme

You can check for wear in the wheelbox by moving the wiper arm away from the screen the see how much you can move the spindle in and out, and rotate it without feeling any resistance (or seeing the other wiper arm move). There is a tab on the wheelbox cover that you can bend in which can remove  some of the slack.

One thing worth checking is that the boss which the arm attaches to is tight on the spindle, they can have a habbit of coming loose resulting in too much sweep like you describe.
