What makes an 8 valve vitty throw a rod????

(1/3) > >>

Disco-Ron:
A mate has a slight issue with lumps of his block not being where they once were, and a conrod being vissible,........

Is this common...?? (45k fsh) or was he very unlucky?
If common..... what makes em go? cos we're gonna drop another motor in it shortly??

Thanks.

Evilgoat:
Have heard of them eating valves but this is the first con-rod I have heard of going the way of the dodo. What was he up to when it went?

jalopy joe:
Normally a result of the piston seizing in the bore, never heard of a Vit doing it though.

Disco-Ron:
Just spent a few hours attempting to get the old unit out, not easy are they..... all the gubbins behind and under the carb is a right pain.....

He was just cruising along, not fast, not silly revs or anything..... sounds like (hopefully) he was just extremely unlucky...... no2 rod broke!

Thanks guys!

Evilgoat:
Worst I've seen is No1 and no4 exhaust valves being non existant and melted piston in no4.

I guess its possible the piston could end up welded/deformed enough to seize. Would love to see pics of the post mortem.

Youd have a lot of warning if that was going on though.
