Connected it up as described above and everything works perfectly. Even with the fan on full and main beam the charge meter stays in the middle. Thanks.

The thing that had me confused was that there are two cable running in parallel to the battery instead of one thick one. Why?

Also not having a tacho the one connection was too many and there is a "black box" (interference suppresor?) too many.

Seems to be working now. I have to say that compared to the old one it would seem very easy to drop a spanner and connect + to ground :-(
