Ashcroft transmissions TD5 Gear upgrade

The Ashcroft upgrade only affects high ratio. If you changed the tyre size you'd lose your low gearing in low box as well. Which may or may not be important; a 10% change in gearing isn't going to make too much difference at the low end.

Running 255/85 16's and no noticeable hindrence in running larger tyres in low. The TD5's appear to have better engine breaking than the TDI's so hasn't been a problem for me. Having said that up until latest one experience has been in various V8 autos so it all seems slow to me now!
burgerman With 235/85 16's on you are running about 4% less gearing than me on 255/85 16's. With this tyre size you may find that fitting the Discovery gears upgarde you gear it up by too much. IIRC the upgarde is about 15% increase. Ring Dave at Ashcrofts and ask their opinion about tyre size etc. You'll get no <edit>stuff from rear end of cow<edit> from them.

--- Quote from: "smo" ---I had it done on my 110, mainly because i wanted better cruising characteristics. The upgrade is great but dont expect it to be a world apart, its not a masssssive change but is worth it.
I did have an allisport intercooler and chip on mine as well tho :D

The cooler and chip aren't there any more and she's wearing 35's  needs a bit more right boot when pulling away but haven't noticed any real increase in top speed - too noisy with the muds on lol

I had the disco2 high ratio gears in my 90Td5 HT. I was also running 255/85x16 MT. The performance dropped of drastically with this setup & I was having to rev it harder & motorway speed was hard to get to & maintain due to the 15% or so increase in gearing, in high range.
However, I then fitted a Dastek chip, EGR removal & straight through mid exhaust, all supplied by Devon 4x4 & wow what a difference. The torque there from tickover right through the rev range, no turbo lag, the MPG was averaging 27-30 (I do have a heavy right foot  ) & it sounded awesome 8)
I even managed to pull a rather heavy 101 off a dual carriage way with it, in an emergency!!
Is it worth the money...depends if you do allot of light right footed motorway driving so it pays for itself in increased MPG. Personally i'd go for a chip upgrade to increase the torque & bhp so you can change up a gear sooner & maintain speed when going uphills.

The Datek chip, D44 EGR removal & straight through exhaust came to about £600...all fitted by myself easily in one day. From www.devon4x4.com
The high ratio gearing was about £600 fitted...sorry for being so vague but it was about 5 years ago I had it done & I have since sold the 90 along with the bills! ...I have just looked on Ashcroft Transmissions web site & they do the gearing upgrade for £646 fitted... http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/part_34.html
Hope this helps.
Cheers
