Personally if it's going in a Defender, I would only fit a Defender engine.
Especially if you paying some one else to do it...

A defender engine means every part is avalible off the shelf - and it looks like it was a 200Tdi from the factory... which helps if you ever plan on selling it.  'Most' insurance companies would also be happier if it was a Defender spec engine, rather than a Disco one.

With a Disco spec engine... although intially cheaper, it is more labour intensive to fit... and bits needs to be modified - all the coolant pipe work, electric fan etc etc.  IMHO if you are paying someone else to do it, you might as well spend the money on a proper Defender engine and pay less labour.

The other problem with a Disco engine in a Defender is that it looks 'messy'.  I would like to be proved wrong, but so far I have not seen a Disco engine into a Defender conversion that looks neat... by that I mean looks like it is supposed to be there.  Most of the ones i have seen have been a bodge of pipe work - which will actually restrict performance, a mass of jubillee clips and bodged fixings... thus it means if you need a new coolant pipe you have to try and remember what pipe you used.

To some people, looks are of a lesser importance... the fact that it works is the main thing.  But I personnaly want things to look right, as well as working.

If you spent the time, I belive you could make a nice Disco spec engine conversion... but if your paying someone to do it for you it will work out expensive.

Cost wise....

For a Defender spec engine with all the bits (i.e. air filter, rad, intercooler, pipework etc etc) you will be looking at around the £1000 for the engine - if you can find one.

A Disco engine, as well as being more common is also cheaper.  You can pick a Disco engine up with all the bits for £500 upwards - usually closer to the £650 mark for a good'un.

Then cost of fitting....
For just fitting, I'd be looking at paying at least £350 for a Defender engine swap... but then if you were doing it properly you'd really want the cam belt done, all new front end seals, new rear seal, new clutch etc etc
So excluding parts, I reckon 'around' the £500 mark.

So probably around the £1800 mark including all the engine, all the new bits, and the engine swap done properly... if you can find an engine.

However... a Disco engine.
You'd have to add the cost of a Steve Parker down pipe (or pay someone to make one) - which I think is around £160... then you'd need new oil cooler pipes, electric fan, some custom pipework etc etc which would put the cost up.
I reckon time wise, you'd be looking at around £500 just for the fitting of the engine and time spent changing bits around... then add on the cost of the exhaust, fitting the new cambelt, sourcing new pipework etc etc... and it doesn't work out that much cheaper than going down the Defender route.

All in if the engine was £600...
I'd budget on at least £1600 by the time you bought the exhaust, the other new bits (cam belt etc etc)... so only slightly cheaper than a Defender.

These are only estimated costs though...

You are only just over 100 miles away... so not that far
(Ser3 J - is over 450miles away!!!   )  I could even collect your 90 if easier....

I might know of a Defender spec 200Tdi... but need to check - awaiting a phone call - (Ser3 J - if your reading this it has the LT77 attached   )
