Wheel bearings. Will they fit my disco?

(1/2) > >>

muddyjames:
After reading the thread named wheels jammed at 75mph I have decided to check my bearings.

1 front wheel is mega wobly and the other side as slight play in it.

My lovely mechanic chap is popping over later to show me how to change them. I have stripped my wheel down so I can see the HUGE nut and yes all the ep90 (or what ever it is that stinks) is well brown and rusty colour.

A few years ago my ex neighbour gave me some bearings he had for his H reg rangie and thought they maybe useful to me. Well now I am hoping they will be useful too.

The only clues I have about these new bearings I have is the make is mnr the label has 603049 and 603011 written on it. the bearing itself has 603049 engraved on to it.

anyone got any clues on if these will fit? They look roughly the same size to the ones still in the disco by holding them to the wheel.

You'll need a big box spanner for the nut. Not that expensive. If you have a local LR parts place I'm sure they will have one. Please don't be tempted to undo/tighten using a chisels  :x

You may not need new bearings; most of the time regreasing and reset the 'end float' will be enough. The offical manuals give a value for the end float but I have only ever set them by feel. Basically the hub (with no wheel) should spin freely but without any wobble.

You might get away with refitting the lock tabs the once, but normally I replace. It's just not worth taking the chance.

It's worth checking the wheels every so often by jacking each one up and giving it a waggle.  There should be no play at all.  Tightening up the end float often solves any problems, as AndyB says.  If you overtighten, the bearing will wear prematurely, but you should be able to get a feel for what's right.  (There's a scientific way to do it too, as AndyB also says, but I cba with all that...)

yes afink they fit, so should 90/110 ones as i got disco ones on my 90 atm

you may aswell put new bearings and seal in comes to about 12 quid from paddocks. Well worth doing, the box spanner is about 6 quid from there aswell. The general concensus seems to be tighten up fully then back of a little.
