The way I use is to make the mask, then add a Colour adjustment layer in "Multiply" mode - this works really well if the area you're painting over is mainly white with the detail picked out in black.  For the pattern ones, I just add another layer instead of an adjustment layer and paste in the pattern.  Getting the mask right is always the fiddly bit.  Fortunately Mudmonkey thoughtfully provided quite an easy image to work with.
