diesel engine oil in petrol engine??

(1/1)

lucky:
Hi all,

Does anyone know if using oil designed for a deisel engine,  in a petrol engine does any harm??

I owned a clasic Rangr Rover V8 for 5 years and that was all i ever ran it on as i have large supply of it, but i am now about to buy a much newer cherokee and am more concerned about using it in that?? I know they have more detergents in them but could not see that causing to much trouble??

Any advice is much appreciated

Cheers

It shouldn't do any real harm but it won't do as much good.

The oil for diesels has more detergent and a higher TBN, basically the idea is to clean the rings of soot and neutralize teh acids caused by blowpast of burn't sulphur (you will always get some).

As a rule the older the engine is the more tolerant it will be, or more to the point the less dependant on critical properties.

Shame you are not nearer, I might have brought some off you.
