Land Rover since they were bought out by BMW (and subsequently ford) have been *very* picky about use of the Land Rover logo, especially when it comes to reproducing it, so if you were going to use it then I would definately advise that you check with their legal department, being as specific as you can about intended use. Note that if the word profit enters the conversation they will probably say no (even if it doesn't there's a fair chance)
Neil's comment about "digital media" is that the LR oval is a trade mark and a copyright, which means that using it in your logo even on the big wide interweb (i.e. a digital media) is legally dubious, i.e. technically illegal under exactly the same laws that prevent you from reproducing it in print.
I haven't heard of them objecting to any individuals using it in an avatar or a signature, but they might well view a club / forum / organisation under a different light.

Basically, yes... the definition will be theirs and not mine, but I know from experience at work that even the product we give away for free isn't allowed to contain certain logos and trademarks because we do charge for *other* products, sadly the exact interpretation is a little fuzzy, but basically Land Rover will "own" the green oval logo, and essentially anything that looks similar or could potentially be a derivative work (i.e. based on it)
The companies interpretation of "fair use" will vary from company to company, strictly speaking as the copyright holder of the mud-club logo I could be very picky and restrict it's use in pretty much anyway I see fit, Land Rover can do the same (for their logo that is). However you may well find that (especially with larger companies) they will enforce a blanket ban on all use of the logo, if only to avoid the legal differentiation between a club, a club which is a PLC, a club which is a NPO and all sorts of other variations ...
