LP32:
I have looked at the book but it is not very clear about when 4WD can be engaged. I know that standard driving on road and 4WD is a NO NO. What road/ track surface is OK for 4WD without breaking something I have muds fitted so would hope that they grip on all but the tricky stuff. I have been looking at sites that talk about winding up the transmission? THANKS

you shud be ok on a rough track say gravel or the like

LP32:
Thanks Simon, but what sort of distance can you run on decent road withour doing any damage. I am am only green laning so have patches of wet tricky stuff then runs on stuff that I woud take my new passat down without worry, Thanks

jalopy joe:
You have to remember that there is no central differential so that in 4WD the only thing that stops transmission wind up is wheelspin.  So 4WD on a goof surface where you dont get any wheelspin, such as tarmac, is a no no.  However a few yards between muddy bits should be OK.  Hope this helps.

P.R.Howler:
I wont run on hard ground in 4wd, but just stop and select 2wd till you hit the mud again, a gear change is better than a diff/gearbox change
