Couple of post conversion questions...

I recently stuck a 200tdi in my TD 90 and touch wood it's going ok, but I have  few questions to help me finish it off.

1.) I recently used a full tank up in 260 miles. That's 50 litres returning 23.8mpg. This was mainly motorway cruising and not with a heavy right boot! This seems low. The main reason for the conversion was to improve the mpg.

2.)My TD was also quite heavy on fuel. Could there be some huge resisitance in the drivetrain that's killing economy? How would I check for it? It rolls downhill easy enough as it has no handbrake!

3.) I need to service the car this weekend. I'm currently using the TD air filter. Will this be ok for a 200 to breathe through? Will a 200 element fit in a TD housing?

4.) My car makes a racket on boost. It's not exactly a whistle and not exactly a rattle but kinda something in between. Sounds like a truck I suppose. Any ideas what this could be?

5.) I'm presuming the TD guage is not calibrated for the 200tdi engine despite swapping over the TD sender unit. Now the car sits very stable at the end of the white bit which is I presume down to the 200 running about 10-12 degrees hotter than a TD. I found a site with a guy who fitted a variable resistor/potentiometer in line to bring the scales in line but can't find it anywhere! Anyone have a clue what I'm talking about or did I dream it!

6.) Now that it can go faster it's really highlighted the grinding noise on the overrun. When I come off the throttle on the motorway it really makes a racket! Is this diffs or UJ's or...?

Your Tdi wil run on a TD filter mine did!
Sounds like you may have a split pipe somewhere, hence the whistling!
MPG depends on what speeds you were doing/headwinds etc.
You may have been flogging it to overcome the pipe fault.

Tinks:
i reckon your grinding noise in overrun coming of the motorway is more likley to be UJ's than diffs, but its really easy to check just see if they have any play in them, if they dont then they should'nt make ay noise!  Don't forget when you check the Uj's on the front prop to make sure the handbrakes off!

As for the air filter mine never even had an air filter, that was until i took it to desert and thought that all that sand in the engine might not be to healthy for it!! but it always ran ok with it, don't forget that the more air that your engine takes it the more power it will put out, so you'd want to make sure you maximise the air intake! 8)

Mine does about the same to the gallon but i would confess that my right foot is a bit keen and i go every where nearly flat about but still get annoyed cos its still not fast enough!! :lol:

dont forget your still on a 90 1.410 transfer box  :wink:  ( well i presume  :oops: )
so what ever engine you put into it, its still going gulp the fuel :roll:
think how i feel, simex roll cage ect ect on mine  :shock:
what size wheels have you got ?
try running 33 inch tyres, that should help you abit with gearing v soad speeds and mpg

I've just rechecked all the pipes and they seem fine. It's not exactly a whistle, either. Kinda grindy  :shock:

I'm running 33" tyres on it now (ITSTs) I'm gonna buy a load of air pipe new and make it fit properly. That may inprove things. Might have a go at manufacturing an airbox and using a filter from my 4l V8. That shouldn't restrict the fuel much!

When you say check for play in the UJ's, how do you mean play? It turns quite a bit but I gather that's a 'feature' I suppose for less than £20 it's worth replacing them anyway. More bleeding expense!
