My alloy nuts on a 98 300 tdi appear to have grown or swelled and the standard 27mm socket does not fit them all now.  Rather than just replace with the same, is there a better option out there? If not, where's the best place to get them?

they have the daft shiny metal cap on them which swells up but if you hit the socket on it pushes these back to size may have to use a vice to get them back out

they are a pain in the bum

too right they are a PITA. the best trick I have found to get them back out, is to take the socket off the end of the breaker bar and I find a old bolt from the tow bar chassis mountings fits perfectly inside the socket where the breaker bar goes inside. Reason for this bolt is a; it fits inside the socket and b; most importantly when the nut does come out the socket there is enough length in the bolt for you to stop your arm and not thump the floor! Then place socket so bolt is towards floor / wheel nut up in the air and hold the socket and smack it hard onto a tarmac surface! This may need repeating several times!! Also make sure you use a hex socket and not a socket with loads of little notches in other wise the plastic caps rounds off and you will always have to hammer the socket on and the hex socket will never fit. Learnt that 1 from experience!!

Oh and BTW. If you do do the trick above, sometimes the cap end sup with a little dent in but I gave up trying all the other ways possible!

Yes the old RRC steel nuts will mix/match with the later Alloy covered ones.
