110 dash warning lights

I am rewiring my series 3 and have a 110 clocks fitted,on the oil presure and side light warning lamp there are 2 cables going into the connector.Where does the Ground come from as when i used a battery with the black cable on - and then touched the inputs on + nothing came on.Do i just give them a live feed or is there another colour cable i should be looking for.
