Lord Shagg-Pyle:
according to all the conspiracy theorists, this was thought of years ago, but was hushed up, patents bought out etc. Be interesting to see though. Running something on hydrogen. Whats the word that springs to mind? Oh thats it!

   HINDENBURG!

AbyssDJ:
years ago they didnt even know what to do with all the "waste" product that we all now know as lpg........... look what happened to the price of that, eh?!

Skibum346:
Mythbusters tried a number of variants of this and none of them were even plausible due to the high energy input required to start the process.

Sorry to burst the bubble

The Hindenburg's destruction was caused by the materials and paint that was used on the outer face of the airship.  Guess what the materials were?  The materials used in solid rocket fuel.

Range Rover Blues:
Splitting hydrogen and oxegen apart takes a certain amount of energy.  The amount of energy released from the oxidation of hydrogen is roughly the same amount as it takes to create the hydrogen in the first place.  It's called a reversible chemical reaction.  Think of it like a battery.

Now I have heard through contacts that if you introduce Hydrogen into the airstream on a diesel you can burn the fuel more efficiently as Hydrogen is a catalyst.  It's what's going on with an LPG conversion on the old oil burner.  Can release 20% extra energy in the right circumstances but the technology is still fragile.  The vehicle would created the hydrogen as it went along.
