Anyone know what this is?

jnoshea:
I took this off a bracket attached to the steering damper mount yesterday. Anyone know what it is? Very heavy. My guess it's to damp out some sort of resonance.

Jimbo:
Think its what's called a doughnut - not sure of the official name !

burgerman:
As far as im aware its to cancell out vibration from the diff (harmonic balancer?)   Anyhow i removed mine yonks ago and not noticed any difference,

ChrisW:
Yep, it's a harmonic damper, to soak up vibration from the axle/drive train.
It has to be removed when fitting the wrap-around type front diff guard, I've not heard of any complaints of vibration after having removed it.

thermidorthelobster:
Also known as mass damper.  You're right, it's to change resonance.  The piece of wire is so if it drops off, it doesn't smash through somebody's windscreen.

The doughnut generally refers to the rubber ring in some Disco prop shafts, or at least it does when I've heard it mentioned.
