noise/power problems
landroverkeith:
Recently my Disco has developed a very annoying tapping/rattling noise and im having trouble finding out what it is...
its connected to engine speed as the revs get louder so does it etc...
can hear it very clearly in the drivers seat when driving but when idling doesnt seem to do it.
also seems to be suffering a bit of powerloss too struggling up hills that normally i wouldnt bother with but now having to drop into 4th
ive had a look in the engine bay and there doesnt seem to be anything loose or signs of anything i can see
any ideas would be helpfull or ill have to pay a visit to the man in the boiler suit
Range Rover Blues:
Is this on the TDi? sounds like it could be expensive :( on thing that comes to mind is a cracked piston
Skibum346:
Exhaust on cross member?
My engine mounts are a bit on the old side (got replacements to fit... when I can!) and as a result the exhaust rattles at some revs agains tthe cross member.
Budgie:
Pull the rocker cover off and look at the tops of the valves.
There is a cup on the top each valve and these are known to break.
If one breaks then the tappet gap increases by a huge amount so that will cause the tapping/rattling noise but it also decreases the amount that the valve can open and the length of time it's open. Thus it reduces the amount of gas that can pass the valve and you get reduced performance.
Easy fix and not much money, if it's this!! :D

i say check valve clearences first off
now off top of my head for a tdi at normal op temp its 0.20mm
but i usualy can just tell if its out its blatently ovbious
o, some times if they been given a clog full offroad or onroad they can back them selfs off
and it slowly gets worse
