It seems that people don't like to know about what's going on around them these days.

Most pedestrians and cyclists think that it is their God given right to do stupid things in the road (the Highway Code covers them too, not just the drivers of motorised vehicles) on the basis that the person in the car or lorry that squashes them should know that they are about to run across the road less than 10 yards from a pedestrian crossing, or cycle through a red traffic light.
The other day I saw a group of people waiting at the end of the zig-zags by a zebra crossing in order to cross the road rather than use the crossing itself!

It was also my understanding that you should not be distracted when driving. Surely having an ipod plugged into your head is a 100% of the time distraction? Technically the car radio is also a distraction but it is not normally blotting out all other noise.
