Driveline backlash and vibration
mm3107:
Hi folks. Some advice needed, I have just got a 93 Disco 200 tdi and although it's pretty decent there are a couple of issues.
1. Rather concerning vibration/shudder above 55-60mph. It appears to come from the front.
After looking thru various past posts I have checked prop uj's and there appears to virtually no play front or back. No play in the plined sections either. No excessive wear in suspension bushes either.
2. But while doing these checks there does seem to be a fair bit of free play in the centre diff. Now from looking at posts this could either be the transfer box or gearbox, how do you tell the difference??
The gearbox does feel nice and tight, with the notchy 2nd gear very rarley rearing it's ugly head.
If I can get these things sorted that would be great because it's a really clean model with good power and economy.
Any advice would be greatly welcomed.
Cheers

Check your front wheel bearings and and your steering damper

And your track rod ends...

Vibration, well typically at 30-35 MPH and again at 70-75MPH would be the propshaft, you may not notice it at 30 for a start, so 60 -65 could be the prop, or the wheels.
Backlash, they do that, stop worrying.
