simdeb:
our runs very well feel very safe in her tows caravan like a dream simon put the same lift and tyres on her and it hasn't changed a thing speedo is exact but on disco it was way out? must agree the turbo does kick in a bit later but we have no smoke whatsoever when we had her some one put the wrong fuses in her she blew one and that was scary i thought she was going up in flames   the wiring loom to the windows (elec) had shall we say BURNT i left the front heated screen on all day and yes it did flaten the battery! i didn't know it didn't switch off when youturned the engine off (done for posh folks to deice their window and still lock the car!!  )
you know what they say your never too old to learn

The only drastic problem we have encountered (on our 3rd VM in 2 RRC) is with over heating.
If you warp the cylinder heads beyond skimming then the engine is pretty much a right off as new cylinder heads are around £250 each  .
To cook a VM though involved firstly a blocked radiator thanks to a void between the main and aircon radiators being cock full with leaves after 12 years. This was followed by towing modile grain driers up hill and down dale on hot days. The final nail in the coffin was turning the engine off to put more water in via the radiator the moment we came to a stop in a services.
The current engine has servived potential over heating. driving back from wales with a totaly blocked radiator and no temp guage, the first I knew about it was the low water level light. Avoiding the mistake of last time I let the engine idal for some time before removing the pressure cap to fill up and left the engine running all the time. (learning from my fathers mistakes)
The turbo lag can be a pain and the low end torque could do with improving, come to thing of it the vibration a idal is not good, but apart for than the VM gives little cause for conceren.

Well its better than an TD i've come across*, and the last term 2 of the people with TDIs had head gaskets failure, so in comparion the VM isn't doing to baldy if you treat it right.
*to be fair the last TD did go waiding in mud without the plugs in.
