TD5 problem please help!

Hi,
my dad has a TD5 18,000 miles, 2001 (51plate)
whenever he wants to accellarate hard, up a hiull, or over taking someone on the motorway or something its fine to start with, but then it coffs and splutters, and black smoke comes out the exhaust, then when he eases off, its fine again until he tries to accellarate hard again....

any got any ideas as to what the problem is please?

would say air flow meter to start with,have you checked for oil in the ECU loom?

We had something similar at work think it was an intercooler hose that kept blocking up
