extreme90:
nah u dont need a dial test indicator at all, feeler guages and a rule thats it
not that i ever measure petrusion
just fit a 3 dot all the time and never once had a problem
just rebuit me 200 3 tho ago and she still fine even running at 1.1bar
as for head bolts 3 times and throw them in the bin
me i fit new everytime as they aint gonna snap then
just think how fatigued and stressed the bolts are just after 1 tighten up
danny

Range Rover Blues:
The thickness is imprtant though, after a coating of soot the pistons on an indirect injection touch the head, probably the same on a Di otherwise it won't run as well.  DTIs are not that expensive and if you are too tight you can hire them, or use a rule and feeler guages.  Skimming the head makes no difference as it's flat isn't it? the combustion chamber is in the piston (bowl) unlike the V8.

muddyman:
Cassillis you have a P.M.

Cassillis:
Thanks all for the help and advice. Fitting the head today i will let you know what happens. Thanks again
