I know it's a hard question but which would you choose to buy? - ideally a soft top,is automatic a reality as i'm looking at it being a second car so preferably cheap as well.

sj's are the cheepest.
did you want an automatic? if so ive never seen an auto sj.
what are you going to do with it cos on road ride in an sj is querky :D
it is a good policy to never loan your vehicle to anyone unless you accompany them

Hi- looking round you're right so it would have to be a Vitara,auto just makes thinks alot easier at home.There will be a lot of road use but some offroad use for photography and FUN.

i believe they did do an auto sj but not for the uk. but havin owned both an sj and a vit i would say get a vit, there a bit better off road an more powerful to use everyday. not much in it price wise.

Believe it or not i think it is a useful part of the body,it helps me stand up!,but then again it goes faulty after a few drinks :lol:

I would be inclined to go for an SJ for a bit of off road fun, however if its for lots road use i'd have a Vit... Says the man who drives a GV!

SJs seem to be eaiser to mod and a bit more flexible. THAT said, the vit feels like it has bricks for springs and the SJs are worse :)

Quite happy with my 1.6 SWB soft top Vit :)

V6 auto vitaras are usually a good buy, pretty cheap, good power etc.
Id only recommend an SJ for someone who wants to mod the damn thing, cos as standard they are woefully under everythinged.
underpowered, overgeared,uncomfortable,the list goes on.

Theyre fun tho :D
Go on....cut me in half........it says SUZUKI all the way thru the middle!!

Thanks guys- looking at a couple of Vitaras at the moment,one hardtop and one soft,i think it will have to be a Vit. as i won't a auto really. Or as a stupid question what are the manuals like on the clutch as i have a dodgy left knee?,regards Andy. Well the soft-top we'll forget about at a grand and 9 years old with high mileage and no service history.

We had an sj before the vitara and after having experience of both the vitara marginally wins.

The vitara has a bit more comfort,coils which work out easier and cheaper for lifting and looks more modern all while still giving you the same laughs and giggles offroad as the sj,just a shame they didn't build the vit with a similar chasis tol the sj.

Allan has been around sj's for 10 years or more and never seen a rotten chasis yet,both our vitaras have needed chasis work and were a good few years newer than the sj's.
Another bad point about the vitara is that shafts and cv's tend to break quite easily,in 10 months i have gone through 8 shafts,not really a problem for us because we have loads of spares but could be a problem if we had to buy new,i think alot of it was down to my DB tyres being too aggressive,haven't broke anything since changing to camac terras.

The vitara also turns alot more heads but thats maybe because mine is all kitted out and painted PINK lol!!!

No contest, I have had both and had to change to a Vitara for the sake of my 45 year old back!. An SJ is great fun for messing about locally but you definately don't want to drive far in one.

My 16V SWB Vitara is comfy (ish), fast and goes anywhere that the SJ did. One thing that no one else has mentioned is that the Vitara will cost more to insure.

Hi andy you can slide the back seats forward for a bit more boot room,i would say maybe enough for the jack russel on short journeys but not for buth.


Another point about the vit that i forgot to mention is the fuel consumption, and sj can run for a year on £10 fuel LOL not the vit.

As standard my vit was averaging 22-25mpg on MT's i get around 18mpg 20 if im really lucky,i was shocked by this to begin with some sports cars get much better consumption that this lol

Vitara 1.6 carb SWB soft top gets about 23MPG
Audi 90 Quattro 2.5 Turbo gets about 25MPG

So yes, I'll say that too. EFI will be a lilttle better than carb

I get 18-20mpg out of mine with mud tyres on. It will leave a 1.6 for dead on the road. Everything on a V6 is stronger, gearbox, driveshafts, CV's etc. There is room for my dogs in the back too, all V6's are LWB. They're pretty good off road too. Equipment wise you get electric mirrors, electric windows, PAS, headrests all 'round, split rear seats, auto free wheeling hubs, twin airbags & central locking, with aircon, auto & leather as options. 136bhp, 1.3 tons, 100mph 0-60 10.9 secs.

Hi Madmacs i've been looking at a V6 today on a N plate and must admit to being tempted,as for interest it's at £795 as it stands or £995 with MOT,supposingly not needing much work!. Good or bad price what do you think guys/gals.

I paid £2,500 for mine a year ago, which was about right at the time. They have dropped in price now (like all 4X4s have). You can get a mint one with all the options and FSH for around £1,500 - £2,000 now. I'd be suspicious if he wants £200 to M.O.T it though. You could always ask for a failure sheet.  At £995 it's a cheap car, just make sure it won't need another £200 for next year's M.O.T. They did a turbo diesel as well in the LWB which is almost as quick, never seen a diesel auto though.

I honestly don't know. In the 2 years I have had mine I have never had to replace any of those components. I am going to buy a Calmini 2" lift kit soon, so I will have to replace the bottom arms then. The Calmini kit is £499+VAT! You get a lot of stuff for that though, not just inserts and springs.
