Dropping the box on a P38
Lance:
Hi yall, after a process of elimination, the vibration at 3,000 rpm is down to the flexi drive plate, which I beleive is bolted onto the torque converter. Has any one replaced one of these who would like to share their experience :?:
blackbob:
take the engine out its much easyer than taking the box out as the flex plate is the bit with the starter ring gear on
you can check it for cracks at the bolts if you take the starter out first

I've never really understood that... taking the box out involves a bit of work on the inside, and then just the nuts/bolts/mountings holding it to the engine....
Taking the engine out involves draining the cooling system, fuel lines, engine loom, exhausts, etc. etc.
The flex plate can be changed without needing to remove the box completely.. just like a clutch on a manual, you can do it by splitting the engine and box, pulling the box backwards using a transmission jack or trolley jack and working in the gap.
Be careful not to disturb the torque converter too much as it is located on the oil pump and it's a PITA to get back on in situ.

If you have access to good garage equipment perhaps but I like to limit the amount of time I spend a***ing around under something that could flatten me. Plus when it comes to lining the 2 back up I find it easier.
Each to their own I suppose.
