Can you uprate the 200tdi alternator ?

bensonsnuts:
Ok , spent a bit of time trawling thru the old alternator posts without finding a definite answer.
I reckon the 65a alternator on my 200tdi is on the way out , so if it's possible to uprate now is the time to do it !
I noticed the posts about the different belt systems , but has anybody managed a successful upgrade ?

Range Rover Blues:
I'm going through the same on the V8.  You can swap the 65 amp for the very rare 80 amp (I've never seen another one) but I find it will eat the belt in about 3 hours  so I use a wider belt and that's fine.

I'm looking at fitting a 100 amp as used on the early LSE, My LSE has the serpentine engine, I had considered an engine swap to this style as the belt is much quieter.

Anyway, the 93 model SE and LSE had a 100 amp alternator to power all the toys, it ran a 4 vee belt from a special crank pulley, over a guide pulley on the PAS to the alternator.

So buy yourself the 100 amp S/H and look for a similar part fitted to the TDi lump, or you might have to get one made.

I upgraded mine to a 100amp from a range rover LSE 4.2 V8.  took about 10 minutes to do.  You can also send a standard alternator to somewhere to get it uprated.  Theres a company on the net who advertise uprating a lucas to 250 amps.  Cant recall the name, its something like extremeamperage.com.

beast5680:
is there a pic of the bigger alternator? i,m sure its the same as some of the agricultural stuff i work on, the 65amp certainly is as we fitted one to a range rover recently

drmike:
In all this no-one has mentioned upgrading the feed from alternator to teh battery. I thought that it needed beefing up as the charge cable will be suitable for 65 amps but not 100 amps - or have I got muddled again?
