Me yet again!

I seem unable to start the defender I got yesterday. Perhaps my own fault in that I didn't see it cold stated before I bought it. I've got a couple of questions to try and narrow down what's wrong

Are the glow plugs vital, or do they just aid in a cold start?
Would it start warm if the problem was the starter motor?
How long does the key have to be half turned before igniting and should I be waiting for the light to come on or go off?

Any other suggestions?

(I've tried jump startnig it, and headlights are at full strength so it's not the battery!)

TDi90:
does it turn over?

Snooky:
you should hold the key for the glow plugs for at least 10 secs, but should then turn OK, but the last question needs to be answered, does it try to turn or not?

TDi90:
i.e. do you hear a clicking sound,.... or a turn over engine trying to start sound?

phoenixmad:
if it dosent turn over its your egnition barel i had that last year check your starter moter as well
