Clutch or gearbox?

(1/2) > >>

BigBlue90:
Hi,

Just got home to find brothers '89 2.5 TD 90 dead on the drive. I have had a look around it and it starts and runs ok but struggles going in to gear. With the foot on the clutch it refuses to go into any of the forwrd gears but with a little grinding will go into reverse. When it gets into gear you can reverse with no problems and the clutch point feels normal. You then have to give it a bit of stick to get it out of gear again. Up untill this point the gearbox has been fine.

Just a bit confused with it really and wondered if any one had any ideas on simple solutions or if anyone had a similar problem.

Thanks in advance.

yup have had this prob. its the clutch mate.
its a big job, and can take a while, especially if you never done it before.

Hang on a min....Not nessasarly....

Could be you have been leaking hydrolic fluid and you run out of fluid so when ya press the pedal it dont disengage the clutch properly thus hard to get into gear because they still spinning.

OR it could be the clutch fork has bent or the pin has pushed through the fork which is common.

OR the clutch thrust race / Release bearing has collapsed

there are a few things which can cause a clutch to do this..........

Dont goto a garage get a mate about you first to have a look then you ask the garage howmuch to repair whatever it is. Any normal garage will just fit you a clutch and all the bits when you did not need them and charge you the earth. It may just be your slave cylinder which is leaking which costs what £15 to £30 and what £30 to fit.

Check the fluid level under the bonnet above ya pedals.....

Cheers for those thoughts chaps. Having seen all the goings on in here for fitting 200tdi engines we are having a think at the moment about maybe going down that route. It is goint to a friendly garage soon to check out the damage while we decide on what to do with it.

Cheers for the help. :D

That photo is ace mate but how did it make it with the air intake in the wing..... Or did it not.....if it did then that was one very luck fella....
