Being a (ex) Discovery owner, I don't know the ins and outs of "Defenders", so I thought I'd ask

Defender, 90, 110, CSW ... there seems to be so many options! Is a Defender the same as, or different to a 90? Do 90's have rear seats? I don't know what else to ask ... so come on and tell me everything!

Jimbo:
Gords,

Defender is the 'new' name for the 90, or 110
90 is the short-wheel base (swb), 110 is the long wheelbase (lwb)

You can get Defenders/90's/110/s in the following body styles:

Truck cab - only front seats, rear window is behind the front seats
Hard top - still only front seats, but covered (with a hard top) loadspace behind
Station Wagon - more than 2 seats, 110's could have up to 12
County Station Wagon (CSW) - a posh version of the station wagon, think it had stripes on the sides, cloth seats and a radio.

And then, all/any of these can have 2 or 3 front seats - if 2, you get a cubby box where the front middle seat would be (you can swap the seat for a cubby box and vice-versa)

Oh, and then there's the double cab 110's - two rows of seats, and a opne/tilt covered rear load space, and the soft-top 90's (NAS style)

I think it's also safe to say (no doubt someone will correct me), that you can havea hard top 90 or 110, with seats in the back, and then again you might find a 90 or 110 SW that's had the rear seats removed (or a hard top that's had side windows fitted !!!!!!!!)

If you think of, and treat a 90/110/Defender like a big boys Meccano kit you can't go far wrong

Rich_P:
Just going to add that the Defender name was added when the 200TDi was fitted to the 90/110/130 as a standard engine at the factory.

Oh yes, also the very early vehicles were called OneTen and Ninety, not 110 and 90. ;)  Infact, the very early ones also had two piece windows and sliding windows like a Series, but were angled unlike the Series windows.

Jimbo:
Oh, and I suppose we ought to do a list of engine options:

3.5 V8
2.25 Petrol
3.9 V8
2.5 normally aspirated diesel
2.5 Turbo diesel
200Tdi
300Tdi
2.5 Td5

And anything else that you can think of that would fit - Perkins Prima, LDV van lump, various Rover car V6's and V8's, I think the list goes on, and on, and on........

gords:
See, I knew it wasn't simple!

Regarding seats in the back - do they face sideways or forwards (please don't say "yes" ) Do they get full seatbelts or just lap belts? Remember, don't just say "yes"
