Beer tokens is a promise of a drink in exchange for goods or services:
--- Quote --- Help me change my tyre and I'll pay you with beer tokens
--- End quote ---
This would infer, help me change my tyre and I'll provide beer, or take you out for a drink afterwards. Similarly, you can offer beer tokens to people far away, on he promise that you will get them a drink next time you meet.
