Rear diff seal!!!!

sogster:
Hi there folks.

Ive got a 1998 50th aniversary Discovery. The rear diff oil seal has gone and is in need of replacement. I popped down to my local dealer (but i won't mention their name for fear of upsetting the moderator   ) Told them what i needed and for what car and they promptly placed the new seal in front of me and I parted with my £8.80. I then popped down to a friends garage and we proceeded to drop the prop shaft. Once the prop shaft had been removed we expected to see a 24mm bolt. Oh no!! In there wisdom they have fitted a piece of metal which covers the nut and can only bee removed with a "special Landrover tool".

So my question to you is...... Does anybody own this special tool? if not can anyone tell what the cost is likeley tobe if they have had the same problem?

Many thanks

Soggy  (Garry)

Sorry, I can't give you any details on the tool required, but I'm not too impressed with the cost of the seal either as the ones that I've just bought cost £1.20 each!

I'm unsure of the piece of metal covering the bolt, but I have a tool for removing non essential items of metal - an angle grinder, any use?

UNG:
If I remember correctly the piece of metal is the spigot that locates the prop shaft and keep it running central

To remove this I normally use a large socket over the spigot and a 10mm bolt and repair washer as a puller through the socket ( the spigot has threaded hole in it ).
Alternatively if you have access to a slide hammer this is another way to remove it

Hi UNG,

thanks for that idea. I might just climb underneath in the morning and have a go at that.

Cheers,

Sogster.
